This is a post about fried chicken, and we’re going to share a recipe for Old Fashioned Fried Chicken. I don’t know if you have heard of Old Fashioned Fried Chicken before, but it’s a Southern classic that you should try at least once. The secret is the shortening, which gives the chicken a nice, crispy crust.
What is Crisco?
Crisco is a type of shortening that has been used in food preparation. It’s made from partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, and it provides a nice, golden color to foods that are fried or baked. Crisco is also high in unsaturated fats and cholesterol, which gives it a distinctive flavor and makes it ideal for deep-frying.
It is usually used as cooking oil, but it can also be used in baking, as a moisturizer, and for other cosmetic purposes. Crisco is chemically stable and has a long shelf life, making it easy to store and transport. It also has a high smoke point, so it can be used in high-temperature cooking recipes like fried chicken. The most popular way to use Crisco is to deep-fry chicken in it. This not only gives the chicken a crispy exterior but also renders it very moist and flavorful.
How does Crisco help in the recipe for Old Fashioned Fried Chicken?
Crisco is an excellent ingredient for Old Fashioned Fried Chicken because it gives the chicken a crispy and golden coating that seals in the juices and makes sure that the chicken is cooked through. It’s also important to use Crisco in moderation, as too much of it can result in a greasy and unsatisfying dish. It’s best to mix it with other ingredients so that you get the desired level of flavor and texture.

Ingredients
For fried chicken:
- A whole chicken, cut into 6-7 pieces
- 1 cup buttermilk or evaporated milk
- 3.0 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 2 ½ teaspoons paprika
- 1 cup of regular flour
- 2 teaspoon poultry seasoning
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt according to taste
- 1 cup of Crisco shortening.
For Poultry Seasoning:
- 4 teaspoons of dried sage
- 2 teaspoons of fresh marjoram
- 2 teaspoons of rosemary, both dried and ground
- 2 teaspoons of dried thyme, ground
- 2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Poultry Seasoning. In a small mixing bowl, take 4 teaspoons of dried sage. Then, add 2 teaspoons of fresh marjoram, 2 teaspoons of dried and grounded rosemary, 2 teaspoons of dried thyme, and 2 teaspoons of ground black pepper. Blend all the ingredients into a bowl, cover it, and keep it in the refrigerator for half an hour. Your poultry seasoning for old-fashioned fried chicken with Crisco is ready.
Step 2: Make the egg-milk mixture. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, take one egg and beat it slightly. Then add 1 cup of evaporated milk or buttermilk and mix them well. After preparing the mixture, set it aside.
Step 3: Make the flour mixture. For this part, you can use either a mixing bowl or a large plastic bag. I would suggest you use a large plastic bag because it makes it easy to shake and coat the chicken in the mixture properly. So, I am going to describe the process using a plastic bag. In the plastic bag, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, salt, 2 ½ teaspoons of paprika, and 1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning. Zip the bag and shake all the ingredients well.
Step 4: Dredge the chicken in the flour mixture. The next step is to coat the chicken finely in the flour mixture. Take 4-5 pieces of chicken at a time and put them into the flour mixture kept in the plastic bag. Zip the bag again and shake very well so that all the chicken pieces get deeply coated in the mixture. After dredging the chicken pieces, remove them from the flour mixture and proceed to the next step.
5: Dip the chicken into the egg-milk mixture. Now it is time to use the egg-milk mixture. First, you must take the flour-coated chicken pieces, put them into the egg-milk mixture, and then dredge them well. Ensure that the chicken pieces get finely coated in the mixture and ensure that all of their surfaces are well furnished by the blend. Following this, we will dip the chicken pieces into the flour mixture again, keeping them in the plastic bag, and repeat the process.
Step 6: Frying. It is time to having deep-fried yummy chicken. You can use either a skillet or a deep fryer for frying. A deep fryer is recommended for use. I am going to describe the process using a deep-fryer. As we make our old-fashioned deep-fried chicken with Crisco shortening, take 3-4 inches of Crisco shortening into the deep-fryer. Plug it into a power supply and turn the switch on. Set the temperature at 365 degrees Fahrenheit and the timer for 15 minutes. Then, keep all the chicken pieces in the basket of the deep-fryer and close the lid. After 15 minutes, you will find the chicken pieces have turned golden brown, which means your yummy old-fashioned deep-fried chicken with Crisco is ready to serve.
Step 7: Serving. Dressing is another important step in cooking. After placing the chicken on the serving plate, you can spread 1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning, paprika, and black pepper. Enjoy your old-fashioned fried chicken with Crisco with your family and friends.
